Job Description
Company Description
Schaeffer Electric Co., Inc. is a premier electrical contracting company in St. Louis City County, MO, specializing in residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. Our services include electrical, design build, data/communications, and lighting maintenance, catering to both new construction and existing structure needs.
Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Continuous Improvement Specialist at Schaeffer Electric Co., Inc. The Continuous Improvement Specialist will be responsible for analyzing processes, implementing business process improvements, driving operational excellence, leading process improvement initiatives, and providing training to staff.
Responsibilities:
- Corporate Continuous Improvement :
- Internal Business Consultation : After taking time to learn current processes and procedures, documenting processes and details, create suggested changes and calculate expected returns based on new strategies.
- Aligning Projects with Strategy : Analyze opportunities for improvement and select/implement based on impact vs. cost calculation.
- Long Term Solutions : Work with the leadership team to understand the long-term vision for the company and work to clarify and document that vision. In evaluating larger solutions to opportunities and obstacles, each should consider the overall corporate vision.
- Operational Continuous Improvement :
- Fixing Problems : Lead and manage strategic initiatives focused on improving field productivity, reducing rework, and enhancing schedule adherence in electrical construction projects.
- Responsiveness : Because of our size, we can be extremely agile in everything we do. Agility begins with listening and responding quickly to issues within the company. While solutions may not be quick, discussions about ideas and feedback can and should be.
- Standards of Operation : Collect and document practices for the entire company. This starts with preconstruction planning, project execution, and closeout processes across all projects. It will also include areas like service, accounting, etc.
- Process Improvement : Analyze project performance data (e.g., labor hours, material usage, installation rates) to identify inefficiencies and recommend corrective actions. Work closely with project managers, foremen, estimators, and procurement to streamline workflows and eliminate bottlenecks.
- Teaching Others :
- Lean Concepts: 5 Why, 8 forms of waste, etc. Implement Lean Construction, 5S, and other continuous improvement methodologies on job sites and in the office.
- Trainings: Develop training programs and lead workshops to build a continuous improvement mindset across teams.
- Process Mapping: Facilitate process mapping sessions, teach the methodology, and help refine workflows.
- Stakeholder Buy-in : As you are well aware, if you don’t have buy-in from the people using the solution, it’s pointless to create the solution. A good portion of the time in this position will be spent gaining the trust of those within the company and getting the stakeholders on board with solutions and standards being created.
- Owning the CI Culture : Work within the company to build the Continuous Improvement culture. Until we could get to a point where CI is an intrinsic, integral part of the culture, you would be the owner.
- Immediate opportunities : We are at the start of onboarding onto Quickbase. This will be a huge lift for us without a dedicated person leading the charge. While the basics will be in place prior to your arrival, the goal is for it to be the hub for everything that happens on a project. It will be the tool that allows easy adoption of the SOPs.
Key Deliverables :
- Documented improvement : We don’t currently track many KPIs. The expectation would be to establish the current measurable statistic or KPI. Then, through the improvement process on a task, measure the statistic again and document the change.
- Standard Operating Procedures : Documented procedures with iterations as needed.
